Baron’s Field Log, Halifax, Canada
Dispatch No.31 : A Nest for Fabled Sea Creatures
The Baron encounters “Old Bess.”
HALIFAX is awash with cozy “groghouses” that have absorbed the seemingly tall tales of mysterious seafarers for more than a hundred years.
According to the Baron’s notes, the denizens of this city guard manifold secrets from the deep.
I. The Best Groghouse for tasting an Electric Ghoulfish
Alexander Keith’s Brewery serves the heartiest ghoulfish in Nova Scotia (to those that know to ask for it). Marked by luminescent scales, they are packed with a fizzy oomph that’s drawn from bolts of lightning. The Baron writes that his consumption of a single fillet had left him unable to sleep for two weeks.
II. The Best Groghouse for Discovering Old Bess
The walls of The Split Crow are plastered with newspaper headlines about Old Bess; an enormous lobster, thought to be an omen for bountiful fishing hauls. Von Shoogenheimer recommends the Old Bess Broth, made using the sweetest knucklemeat from cold water crabs and lobsters.
III. The Best Groghouse to Hear a Sailor’s Song
At The Henry House, the Baron was introduced to Patrick McGwinch, who keeps a meticulous log of eavesdropped tales. McGwinch claims to have corroborated the existence of the Point Pleasant Pixie, a mercreature that taught sea shanties to drunken boatmen.
